Chris Gregory will publish Minstrel Boy: The Metamorphoses of Bob Dylan — Volume Two in October 2025, the latest move in his Picasso of Song trilogy. The book follows Dylan’s post-’66 arc with precision and flair, mapping a long pivot from retreat to resurgence to reinvention across 1967–1990.
Gregory structures the story in three movements—Retreat 1967–73, Return 1974–78, Rebirth 1979–90—blending close textual analysis with biographical detail and vivid eyewitness accounts from the stage. He tracks the crosscurrents of folk, blues, country, gospel and rock and roll, and threads in cultural touchstones from William Blake to the King James Bible, writing with ironic humour and an openness to competing readings. “This book offers the depth of academic study but is written to be accessible and enjoyable to fans and general readers alike,” he says.

The trilogy runs in reverse chronological order; Volume Three will rewind to the early years now in progress.
