This led to a memorable stint in the Toohey’s Gold, Good as Gold advertisement, followed by their signing with renowned music mogul, Michael Gudinski, under Mushroom Records. With their debut album, “What Can You Play?”, peaking at number 74 on the ARIA charts, The Musicmen solidified their place in the Australian music scene. They even shared the stage with the likes of Will Smith, John Farnham, Terence Trent Derby, and Kim Wilde at the 1993 Coca Cola Music Awards on the stunning Gold Coast.
The tale of The Musicmen and their founder, David Brooks, has captivated audiences, and a book detailing their journey is set to release in late 2024. Amidst their successful musical career, The Musicmen have added “Angeball” to their repertoire of songs on Spotify, such as “I’m A Lad From Bury” and “I’m An Iceberger & Not Dead Yet”. David Brooks shares, “The inspiration for ‘Angeball’ stemmed from the meteoric rise of Ange Postecoglou. We had the pleasure of playing against Ange during his time with South Melbourne, and now, here he is, revolutionizing the game as head coach for Glasgow Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.” The song, a poignant tribute to Postecoglou, is a celebration of his groundbreaking “Ange Ball” style of play. The Musicmen express their gratitude to Postecoglou for elevating football in Australia and acknowledge his impact on the sport’s “family” Down Under. The idea for the song was met with immediate approval from The Choirboys, who enthusiastically granted The Musicmen permission to parody their iconic Australian anthem. Most recently, The Musicmen mesmerized the audience at South Melbourne’s season launch, the team’s first club where Ange played, and where he coached them to multiple premierships.
