Announcing Tour Dates: How Akram Abdulfattah is Using Music to Bridge Cultural Divides
Akram Abdulfattah, the Palestinian-American violinist, music composer, and producer, is currently on tour with his most noteworthy projects to date: Jawa, the Sirat Trio, the Monologue Music Ensemble, and accompanying pop artists from Palestine and the Arab world. The tour showcases his unique fusion of different soundscapes to create a beautiful interplay between different musical cultures.
In 1995, at the age of 4, Akram’s family moved back to their hometown Kawkab Abu El-Hija in the Northern Galilee, Palestine, which marked the beginning of his life-long exploration of traditional Palestinian culture. During his formative years he found great pleasure in exploring the rich nature and traditions of the village, which inspired him to express himself musically. Akram’s talent garnered recognition in 2006 when he won second place in the Marcel Khalifa competition. In 2008, at age 18, he graduated from Beit Al-Musica Conservatory with honours and was quickly recruited to teach at the same institution.
Over the next few years Akram performed with well-known Palestinian singers and pop artists, continued to win awards, and collaborated on several international projects. Perhaps most noteworthy was his performance with Mohammed Assaf as a violin soloist (2013-2015), during which he composed and recorded Awan’s first album. In 2016 Akram decided to take a break from pop and classical music and focus fully on achieving his goal of transforming music to a universal language for peace and justice.
He composed and recorded Jawa, his first fusion album in collaboration with musicians from Sweden and Palestine, introducing a distinct mix of Pop, Jazz, and modern and classic Arabic music. Inspired by the music of Carnatic violinist L. Shankar, Akram journeyed to India two years ago in search of blending Eastern and Western sounds. The trip opened windows of opportunities for Akram to collaborate with various international musicians, resulting in the formation of the Monologue Music Ensemble and the Sirat Trio, introducing a compelling fusion between Classical Arabic and Indian music.
