REVIEW: Love & Supernatural, by Folk Artist, Alex Roberts
If you’re a fan of Tom Waits, then you’re going to love this! Acclaimed folk singer, Alex Roberts, is breathing new life into his 2013 hit album, Love & Supernatural. Releasing on the 28th October, the re-release boasts a massive 17 songs, with a remixes and remasters of the original tracks, as well as five live bonus tracks. With a well loved and respected album reworked, there will be plenty to admire on this album – do not miss out!
As a folk artist, great vocals and guitar work is Alex Roberts’ bread and butter, it’s something that is evident throughout Love & Supernatural in every second of every song. With a voice that isn’t too dissimilar to an acoustic Paolo Nutini, he delivers countless perfect vocal performances – giving each song the attention they deserve with every note sung exactly as it should be. There is no doubt that Love & Supernatural is just as good today as it was in 2013; an album that is most certainly a classic that has stood the test of time.
The quality of his music is demonstrated in the very first song on the album. Opening with ‘Wandering Aengus’, a song based on the 1897 poem by W. B. Yeats, Roberts gives an impeccable guitar and vocal performance with lyrics that tell the story of W. B. Yeats’ poem to an astonishing level of detail and pace. A strong start to the album, which also serves as the lead single, it leaves you on the edge of your seat awaiting more of the same vocals, guitar and lyrical content that gripped you in the first place – and Alex Roberts gives us exactly that.
Songs such as ‘To Abeona’, ‘Lord Franklin’ and ‘On Your Journey Home’ keep within what made the first song so great and showcase the talent of Roberts time and time again. It goes without saying that this album is more than deserving of anyone’s time, and with a re-release adding five live bonus tracks, we’re exposed to more intimate and raw performances which only adds to the genius and talent of Alex Roberts.
Live songs in ‘Watch Them Stars’ and ‘Jack of Diamonds’ are new to the album, both deliver a quintessential Alex Roberts performance that suits Love & Supernatural perfectly. The other songs are live versions of ‘Lord Franklin’, ‘Every Fall in Your Step’, and closing out with a live version of the lead single ‘Wandering Aengus’, adding a new dynamic to the songs that make us appreciate them that much more.
An album worthy of a re-release with added genius and new dynamics, sculpted by the talents of Alex Roberts. An overall very good album, with even more good music added into it. Coming 28th October later this month on all of your favourite streaming platforms, if you’ve not heard it before, it’s something you need to add to your playlist – you do not want to let music this good pass you by. With a plethora of previous releases to get stuck into, and the re-release of Love & Supernatural coming later this month, every fan of good music should be thrilled.
